Setting a casino deposit limit is a straightforward process in an account’s responsible gaming tools - but applying it, and the reverse, is not always so immediate. Decreases to a deposit limit generally take effect right away, whether it’s a daily, weekly, or even monthly amount. But increasing a limit, or removing one, typically requires a cooling-off period. The length can vary, from 24 hours to 168 hours, but in all cases the limit can’t be overridden or shortened by support. On top of that, some operators may perform checks before approving a limit increase.

How the limit is changed in account controls

Setting a deposit limit starts in a submenu under an account’s responsible gaming or Self-Exclusion controls, though the location or label can vary. In most operator sites, the player navigates to the main menu and then to “Account” or “Deposit Method” on the account page. From there they select “Deposit Limit” or similar. Choosing that submenu brings up fields for setting limits: daily, weekly, and monthly.

The operator site prompts for a target limit to defend against overspending over each period. Entering a sum for each applies that limit from the next time period, based on the operator's reset cycle. So an untouched daily limit takes effect at [a number]. The weekly limit takes effect at [a number]. And the monthly limit takes effect at [a number].

If the player later wants to change a limit in place, they go back to the controls. There they set a new target number. Decreasing any figure takes effect right away. There’s no operator or regulatory pause in store for a tighter limit.

Why decreases work now and increases do not

When a player tightens a deposit limit, the change takes place as soon as it’s requested, with no exceptions for daily, weekly, or monthly amounts. But increases to any limit require an extra waiting period before they take effect.

That cooling-off period is in place as a safeguard, to keep players from raising their limits in a fit of decision-making during a losing session. It is built-in, automatic, and unwaivable. For OLG players in Ontario, the cooling-off period is 168 hours (7 days) for increasing a limit.

What the cooling-off period actually does

Once an increase is requested, the player’s current deposit limit continues in effect, unchanged, until after the cooling-off period ends.

At the end of that time, the operator site gives the player the opportunity to confirm the higher limit before it becomes effective. During this time, the casino block for the original limit stays in place. The player has to log in and explicitly confirm the limit increase..

Different limit periods: daily, weekly, monthly

Limits are commonly modelled as daily, weekly and monthly periods. However, a gambler who means to apply limitations across weeks needs to check the settings for daily and weekly limits.

The weekly limits take effect [a number], so a change today takes effect [a number]. Monthly controls change, if set, at [a number].

Jurisdiction and brand differences

In some jurisdictions, Ontario for example, every deposit-limit increase is met with a minimum cooling-off period of seventy-two hours. During that time, the player cannot raise their limit or reinstate one they took off. Other gaming regulators in other places determine their own such rules.

That's why players need to be aware that the timeline for a limit request on one gaming brand may not be the same on another, even if it's the same overall operator.
